What to Talk About on a First Date (and What to Avoid)
Most first-date nerves come from one fear: running out of things to say. You don't need a script, just a few good topics and genuine curiosity.
Easy openers
- How their day or week has been.
- Something you talked about in your chats.
- The place you're in: the food, the music, the neighbourhood.
- Weekend plans or a recent trip.
Topics that open up
- What they love about their work, or what they'd do instead.
- Hobbies and what got them started.
- Favourite places in the city.
- Family and friends, in a light way.
- Something they're looking forward to.
Questions that go a bit deeper
- "What's something you've changed your mind about recently?"
- "What does a really good day look like for you?"
- "What are you proud of that most people don't know?"
Save these for later
- Detailed stories about exes.
- Heavy topics like money troubles, unless they come up naturally.
- Interview-style questions about salary, marriage timelines or how many children they want.
- Long monologues about yourself. Aim to listen about half the time.
If there's a pause
Silences are normal. Comment on something around you, ask a follow-up about something they said earlier, or simply smile and take a sip of your drink. A relaxed pause is better than a forced question.
Practice on a video call
A short video call before meeting gives you a feel for each other's humour and makes the first meeting much less awkward. On Nexelife, calls are free inside any chat.
