Safe First Date Tips for Meeting Someone From Online
Most first dates are simply a coffee and a bit of nervous laughter. A few simple habits make sure it stays that way, whoever you are meeting.
Before the date
- Have at least one video call first.
- Look for a verified profile.
- Keep chatting in the app until you trust them; you don't need to share your number yet.
- Tell a friend who you are meeting, where and when. Share your live location with them.
Choosing the place
Pick a busy public place you know: a café, a mall food court, a popular restaurant. Daytime is easiest for a first meeting. Avoid going to their home or inviting them to yours on a first date.
Getting there and back
Arrange your own travel both ways, whether that is your own vehicle, the metro or a cab you booked yourself. Keep your phone charged and some cash on you.
During the date
- Keep an eye on your drink and bag.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, you can leave; you don't owe anyone an explanation.
- Have a friend call you partway through as an easy exit if you want one.
After the date
Message your friend that you are home. If anything worrying happened, block and report the person in the app. In an emergency in India, call 112.
