How to Keep a Conversation Going Over Text
A chat starts well, then slowly turns into "haha" and "nice". Text conversations fizzle when they become one-sided or run out of material. A few habits keep them alive.
Give them something to reply to
Instead of "Nice", add a detail or opinion: "Nice! I tried that place last month, the dessert was better than the main course." Details create new threads to follow.
Ask follow-up questions
The best question is usually about something they just said. "Why that one?" or "How did that start?" shows you were listening and lets them tell a story.
Share in return
If you only ask questions, it feels like an interview. Answer your own questions too, and offer small personal stories.
Use callbacks
Bring back something from an earlier chat: "Did you ever finish that series?" It shows you remember and creates an inside joke over time.
Don't be afraid to end well
You don't need to keep a chat going forever. Ending on a high note ("Got to run, but tell me how the interview goes tomorrow!") makes it easy to pick up again later.
Move to voice
If you keep running out of things to say over text, it may be the format, not the connection. A short call often brings a chat back to life.
